Herself (my daughter), a woman in her middle years, reads the Daily Mail. Herself is a connoisseur of English soaps (Coronation Street, East Enders, Emmadale) which is why we are a household filled with televisions connected to Foxtel which spend most their lives tuned to UK TV. We love BBC and Granada productions. Herself is a Dickens fan and has read everything ever written by the great man and owns a couple of different complete editions in lovely binding. For further proof that she is neither illiterate nor unwashed, she is currently working her way through Balzac's La Comedie Humaine. However, she loves Chelsea Lately and The Soup - and the Daily Mail on line. She knows the value - or lack of it - of the Mail but enjoys their lurid gossip.
Stephen Fry has been writing about the Daily Mail to-day. I have snitched the picture above from Stephen's blog and if you go there you will see its significance.
If you read yesterday's post below about the Pope's State visit to the UK, you will find some interesting follow up from Fry in this post.

This blog does not take Anonymous comments. Experience shows that comments cluttered with "Anonymous" are boring and people don't know whether "Anonymous" is one person or many. This is not a decision about freedom of speech. It is a decision about boring or unwillingness to be known by even a pseudonym.
