Of shoes and string and Facebook algorithms ....

We may love or hate Facebook - but do we understand the mysteries behind it? Well, I certainly don't. This is why I am including in my blog and linking on Facebook to this post.

Clearly, the original poster was frustrated and angst-ridden. The response below the post explains what happens behind the scenes in Facebook-land

HOW IT FEELS WHEN SOME OF OUR BETTER VIDEO POSTS GO UNACKNOWLEDGED BY THE VAST MAJORITY, IF NOT ALL, OUR PAGE...
Posted by Church of the Working Class on Thursday, 10 March 2016

Laurence Brown Facebook delivers posts according to an algorithm, which they keep largely secret. They do this, because if they showed people every post, from every friend and page, then we'd just have too many in our news feeds. It's clear that things like youtube videos (which do not auto play) and external links, are often given a lower priority, compared to videos, photos and other content hosted directly on facebook. Other things like 'trending topics' also give posts a boost. These algorithms do get changed periodically, so the skills you need, to compose a successful post, have to be constantly updated. This is just what I've learnt from running several pages on here. I'm thinking that perhaps, criticising the inaction of your subscribers, isn't the best way to encourage them.

In times of poor and bad governance, full, accurate and detailed reporting of the full impact of government policies is a necessity.

Can the art of social media be turned into a science - taking money from your pocket and putting it into mine?

Does conversation about consumerism, the desire for the latest, the biggest, the best leave you cold?  You don't feel that anyone is targetting you.  And even if they are targetting you, you think that you are sufficiently intelligent to withstand their predations.

From The Green Market Oracle
Just in case this brief description is you, I thought you might like to read how it is done. How you are targetted.  Now, I love social media.  I approve of legitimate not-for-profits who do a heap of good by targetting people, including me, to enable their work. But let's not kid ourselves.  This particularly genie-in-the-bottle is out and is being used by all and sundry. Many, many people are trying to turn the art of social media into a science in the hope that this will reveal a treasure map with a guaranteed result - your money into their pocket!

If you haven't already noticed, what all of them try to do - even the Big Names - is that when you go on to a new social media they ask you to let them send an email to all your contact list. An absent-minded tick in that little box can drag you into something which many of your friends will find alienating!

So read carefully .... and, above all, THINK!

Digibiz does it for me

Dear Networkers,

Yesterday got off to a marvellous start.  I attended a 7.30am event - Social Media B31Masterclass - organised by the wealth and experience embodied in Geraldine Carr-Macfie.

And Masterclass it was indeed!  I am sure we could have heard more and asked more questions but social media, how to use it, and understand it was well covered by some very talented presenters which included Dr Helen Thompson [Director, Centre for eCommerce and Communications (CeCC)], Erin McCluskey [Creative Director of Yum Studio], Jordan McPhan [Director of JRM Social, DigiBiz’s young and dynamic eMarketing consultant], and Noelene Gration [Director of Ascend Public Relations& Communications].

I have come home with a more detailed understanding of social media, its marketing utilization, and the length of its reach.

One thing I was pleased to note.  I don't mean to be sexist or female chauvinist with these remarks - but I think it is worth a comment.  Two-thirds of the packed conference room were female.  I counted them.  The presenters were all female.

For me, this was noteworthy because I come from a generation of women who had to fight men for the computer/s.  In fact, computers cost many women their jobs and downgraded some very important administrative skills for which many people to-day still have regard but the particular skills are almost non-existent.  Men had never shown a territorial interest in typewriters - manual, electric, golf-ball, memory - but when computers came on the scene so many men used to think they had a divine right to computers.

Is this female dominance a peculiarity of social media?  I don't know  - but figures are quoted about the number of older females who use Facebook.

Women, in the main, are social creatures and good communicators; good at articulation and verbalization.  Perhaps, social media is a natural fit - even for the busiest of women.  Perhaps, we have found our niche with Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest and...

But how best to use this media? Can we use it constructively? Can we generate income? Yesterday proved the point for me.  Social media is a new world - a new world which brings a similar impact to Christopher Columbus discovering the world was round with the discovery of the Americas.  Human communication has reached a new level.  It is no longer flat and limited and its extent bounded by a sign saying "Here be dragons!".  Communication is now curved, extensive, and - so it seems - boundless as it criss-crosses the known universe on earth and in space.

And if, perchance, you think I exaggerate. I don't. Dr Helen Thompson showed us the new ways we can look at our world, our continent when she displayed for us UB Spatial. Prowl around this site and you will see what I mean.

Postscript:  This marvellous free seminar was made possible the Australian Government and it provides for our government a means of promoting the NBN and getting Australians ready to make the best use of this first-class service. Please get on the Digibiz mailing list so you too can participate in this free training.

As I finished this post, an email popped into my GMail from Gerrie which Networkers might find useful ~~~~~~~~

A tale of two troglodytes: how Julia called time and changed the game!

This blog is a participant in Blog Action Day 2012.
The theme is the Power of We -
which I believe the women of Australia
have demonstrated in support
of our first female prime minister, Julia Gillard,
and in support of reasonable civil discourse.
This is quite a story.
This post is Part 1.
I expect to follow up this afternoon with Part 2.

This wordcloud has come from  Turn Left 2013

I will leave it to a feminist PhD candidate to collect every last thread of this story.  Collecting the most recent and prominent threads has been enough.  Below please find a list of mainstream media links relating to Julia Gillard's speech last Tuesday 9 October 2012.  Among these links both the video and the transcript of the speech are available.

I believe a number of factors led to the speech of 9 October.

Firstly, the ongoing vileness day after day, week after week by conservative forces and the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott.  Please go here to see some of the images used against Julia Gillard.  Many women face sexism and misogyny every day and have to let it go by with dignity - so it has been believed.  There is no doubt that Julia let it go by with dignity - but we do suspect she may have mentally rehearsed what she would actually say given the opportunity.

Secondly, she faced the Canberra Press Gallery to answer challenges which had been going on for a long time regarding events in her earlier life. Julia stood there taking every question the gallery asked and answering in detail.  My view is that if they had stayed there until midnight, she would have kept up her strong demeanour and kept answering their questions.  As it turned out, the gallery ran out of questions after 55 minutes.  But it was a tour deforce with Julia remaining composed, answering lucidly, and even giving some interchange.

Thirdly, what doesn't break me makes me stronger. Unfortunately for the conservative opposition, the Liberal National Party Coalition, they have continued their hardline and vile tactics for over two years. Australia has a 'hung' parliament with the government holding on by a thread with support of a mixed bag of independents and teeny-tiny parties. For Julia and her manager of government business, Anthony Albanese, some days it must feel like herding cats.  Every day that parliament sits, the Labor government is only a vote or two or three away from defeat.  Yet Labor has not toppled as the Opposition expected ... and day by day their frustration, their hatred, their violent language has become more putrid.

So while some believe that Julia Gillard remains the Prime Minister of Australia by luck and with the help of petulant independents, her misogyny and sexism speech proves beyond doubt that this is a strong woman with a sound intellect who is competent, competitive, and determined.  This is what electrified and transfixed Australia - and, as it turned out, the world - last Tuesday.

Now we see and hear a mystified mainstream media trying to play catch up.  They focus on what led to the speech - matters surrounding the now resigned Speaker of the House of Representatives.  They say they had to give context to their reporting.  I have yet to hear any of our senior and serious journalists acknowledging that a number of narratives can co-exist and run concurrently, each with their own context.

The context of the eruption of social media was that a significant number of Australians - perhaps the majority - and possibly a majority of women were fed up.  We have been fed up with the negativity of the opposition.  We have been fed up with the vileness and violence of their language which has poisoned public discourse in Australia.  We want good government.  We don't want either our economy or our nation talked down to glorify the negative agenda of the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott.  Over and over with spontaneity since last Tuesday Australians have said "Enough is Enough".  I am not sure whether we have to wait a little longer to declare Julia's speech cathartic, a national release, rejoicing, breathing out at last.  We will wait to see if that is really the case.

But last Tuesday was significant.  I believe that the women of Australia reached a new milestone then.  Our drooping shoulders could now be lifted and braced. The misogyny and sexism and ridicule and diminution of women would now be fought with dignity and strength.  Men who share the values of Abbott and Jones will have to either shut up or justify themselves, their words, their actions.  Game on! Thank Julia!

A tardis trip to legislating sex discrimination in Australia ... lest we forget

I would like to take Networkers on a trip down memory lane.

With all this bleating from the Liberal National Party who appear to be deaf and ignorant in respect to sexism, let me put you in a tardis and take you back to 1984.

Australia had ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). One of the obligations on a nation in ratifying a UN convention is that the there will be domestic legislation passed to give effect to the convention. Thus it was that the Hawke Government legislated and passed the Sex Discrimination Act 1984.

Perhaps, you may be saying, oh well that's all very ho hum. Well it wasn't. The forces of conservatism, sexism and ignorance rose up to fight this abomination. Conservative churches like the Assemblies of God were to the fore. (We hadn't heard much if anything about Brian and Bobbie Houston and Hillsong at that stage! And there was no Jim Wallace and the Australian Christian Lobby!)
Rosemary Fenton as Miss Australia 1960

And then there was the National Party. This was the year that Ian Sinclair became leader of the National Party. Ian was married to Rosemary Fenton a very lovely former Miss Australia. This was not connected to Miss Australia contests to-day. This was a major fundraiser for cerebal palsy organisations around the country. Then they were known as Spastic Centres. (I know this is a history lesson from another time and space!)

The Nationals were dead against the SDA and who did they trot out to prosecute the case? None other than Rosemary (Fenton) Sinclair. How demeaning! A beautiful, intelligent woman pressed into service against sex discrimination! These are just some of my memories.

The Destroy the Joint campaign against Alan Jones with the cream on the cake of Julia Gillard's attack in Parliament on misogyny and sexism, in my view, has achieved a new milestone for women.

It has become clear in the reporting that there are still some men who just don't get it. But women do - except for those who live in mortal fear of Labor and The Greens. So it's onward and upward from here.

We have been given a very strong vaulting horse
from which we can face the world
with heads held high and arms out there flying!

Happy anniverary to me, happy anniversary to me - and thank you to Twopcharts for the reminder

I don't usually bother with blogging milestones.  However, my friend Denis over at The Nature of Robertson has been marking dates and numbers of posts.

I congratulated him with this comment:
Congratulations, Denis, on your blogging milestone. We have been blogging together for quite a while. I haven't kept up on milestones myself but have done a check.

I began with The Eagles Nest on 6 June 2005 and wrote over 800 posts at http://eaglesplace.blogspot.com.au/. This blog is now closed but still available.

I then continued at The Network with 1246 posts at misseaglesnetwork.blogspot.com. Then there are my other blogs as well. These are to be found by clicking on the tabs at the top of The Network.

We are on Facebook together but I have yet to convince you to begin tweeting.

You and I are living proof that social media is not the sole province of the younger ones.

I have made some wonderful friendships through blogging including you. With you, I have had some of my bestest times. Your expertise is invaluable to me and I frequently prevail upon your environmental knowledge, particularly in relation to birds and plants. And then you send through to me material which you think will be appropriate to my interests.

When we first started blogging you were not in good health ... but you have survived some very serious life issues. Your fortitude, courage, and survival are admirable.

And even now you are often to be found on your tummy in adoration - and gleaning knowledge - of ground orchids. Words fail me in this regard!

Above all, one has to commend you in your endeavours to familiarise people with the Creation around them - through your lectures and tours in national parks and through your blog as well as membership in many environmental organisations.
However, imagine my surprise when I opened up my HootSuite this morning to find that I have been on Twitter for four years and it is MY anniversary. Thx to the good folks at Twopcharts for reminding me. Whoda thunk it?  Only seems like a month or three ago!

Battles go on everywhere, everyday across the globe highlighting all sorts of issues.  I want to highlight a battle that is not as dramatic as the battles in Libya or Syria or Afghanistan.  This is a battle replicated in many ways in democratic civil societies across the globe.

One of the major battlegrounds is anything with the word "public" as part of its classification: public transport, public schools, public housing, public utilities, public roads, public health and public hospitals.

In former communist countries like the USSR and in the still communist market savvy China, highly placed corrupt insiders and former party officials have purloined public property in which their nation had invested.  It's not quite the same in Australia and we don't have anything that quite compares with Eastern European oligarchs (give or take a mining millionaire) or the children of Deng Xiaoping.

What supporters of the free market who want to increase reach and wealth in Australia do is insinuate or worm their way into relationship with government enterprises.  The most scandalous of these relationships are PPPs - Public Private Partnerships. To understand the adverse impacts of PPPs, please follow the writings of Kenneth Davidson who is arguably their greatest critic in this country. The other widespread infiltration into the edifice of public service delivery is outsourcing.

Outsourcing has become an issue in Central Victoria because Bendigo Health wants to outsource pathology services. Staff are determined that the introduction of outsourced pathology will not be a lay down misere.  They are putting up a fight and are now the subject of threats by Bendigo Health.

The High Court of Australia has determined that the Australian Constitution has within its weighty words an implied right to freedom of speech.  Obviously, Bendigo Health does not mind breaching the Constitution in favour of its own interests and the interests of corporate pathology.

Whether the critical staff go ominously quiet at Bendigo Health in the face of the threats remains to be seen.  To keep their jobs over the long term, it might be advisable.  However, if they can't speak; if Bendigo Health insists on muzzling its workforce like some Dickensian employer then I think the rest of us should do it in whatever way we can: talk-back, old media - and the social media that Bendigo Health have vowed to monitor.

Populations in The Middle East have hit the streets and brought about what is called an Arab Spring. Let's make this a Workplace Spring; a Public Sector Spring to protect workplace rights; the equitable public provision of services; and our right to freedom of speech in all its forms.

If Networkers care to look at the dates, they will note that I have been Missing In Action for quite a bit.  Health has been far from good and quite a limiter on my usual existence and activities.  I have even wondered if I will continue to blog.

Next month, should I continue to blog, I will enter my seventh year of blogging.  I am still considering whether to continue. However, I can feel something akin to primal urges and itchy fingers to be back blogging again.  Just in case, I have provided a bit of a revamp to the site with the aim of simplifying it for readers and for me.  The same information that was in the sidebars has now been transferred to a Blog Page available among the tabs above.

I think if I return to blogging there will be a change of ethos.  I have tried to make this a community blog - and I have published all sorts of information and, as demonstrated by the Andew Bolt Fanclub invasion, have made this blog an openhouse for information, campaigns, and opinions.  I don't think I can keep that up anymore.  I was flat out keeping up in the best of times.  I apologise to Networkers for the times that some things have just slipped through the cracks.

So what direction will a revamped Network take?  I am not quite sure.  I don't think I can get away from my community roots.  I think I will still want to put my peculiar opinions forward.  I will still want to reach out to the blogging and social media community through which I have formed so many friendships - some have become face to face friendships, some remain at the end of a blog or a tweet.

Three of these friendships stand out for me - but there are many others as well.  One is with a South African with whom I have been communicating - but never met in person - since about 1998, long before either of us were bloggers and tweeters.  Another is a fellow blogger in another State with whom I have been liaising - and meeting in person and learning from and sharing - since about 2006.  Then there is my urban homesteader friend who lives much closer than the former two. I can't recall how long we have been following each others blogs. She is much younger than I and I am filled with admiration at her attitude, her plans, and what she is already achieving.  Truly, in my view, a kindred spirit and companion on The Way.

So much is written about social media.  Much of the writing is critical.  A lot of it frightens off the fainthearted who have not yet stuck a toe in the social media waters - apart from email.  For me, social media is an enriching experience. I am an ageing single woman living alone.  For me, blogging - Facebook - Twitter - HootSuite - email overcome the barriers of ill health and social isolation so common to older members of Australian society.

So, Networkers who are reading this, please stay in touch with this blog.
The past weeks may only be a hiatus before another journey begins.

Tweet your way to the top - as recorded by Twitter Grader

Has tweeting become an elite sport/vocation/business off-shoot?  My blogging mate in South Africa, Steve Hayes of Notes from Undergound and Khanya,  has hat tipped me on to Twitter Grader.

You can find out the best from the city in which you live, the country in which you live.  That old Pro Blogger himself, Darren Rowse, is only coming second in Oz and in Melbourne.  Takes the cake on followers but not on numerical tweets.  Only so many hours in a day, I guess!  And there's no prize for guessing the occupations of the majority of these high rollers, either!  They are in businesses which demand that they be self-promoters and top tweeters!

Data mining : Social Media: Sentiment Mining: Sentiment Analysis - what marketeers can know about you

Background Briefing is doing some interesting stuff this Sunday.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND SENTIMENT MINING
Reporter: Shevonne Hunt
Businesses and advertisers can already access enormous amounts of personal data on social media sites, from where you live to what you like. The next step is sentiment analysis, where online conversations are mined for words and thoughts, for a commercial advantage. Is this ethical, and could computers really sift sarcasm from enthusiasm?
