Saturday July 17 2010 marks the day for an Australia wide day of action to campaign for the closure of Australia's dirtiest polluting power station, Hazelwood.  Please go here to read more.  Below is advice of two actions (you may have to click on read more).  If anyone has advice of other actions, please either write about them in the comments section or email me at misseaglesnetwork(at)gmail.com

My friend Yvonne who is active in the Maroondah Climate Change group has forwarded the following information which you will find useful if you live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Hi everyone,

"When the people lead, the leaders will follow!"
From Prof. Angela Davis' Talk "How Does Change Happen?"

It is up to us to show that we want action now!
Help us spread the word.
Please distribute this email to your networks. Thanks. Come and join us - or find your own local action - as part of Environment Victoria's National Day of Action on Hazelwood Power Station Saturday morning July 17th. Brown coal is the dirtiest, most polluting and greenhouse gas producing fossil fuel. In 1992, the station was scheduled to be decommissioned by 2005 due to its excessive carbon dioxide emissions, however, a decision by the Victorian Government in 2005 allowed the power station to remain operational until 2031. We are trying to get the message across to politicians and the public that Hazelwood Power Station can and should be replaced as a matter of urgency. We already have the technology. The people of Latrobe Valley will benefit from a new clean industry that can not only improve the quality of the air they breathe but will also generate jobs... We just need the political will to stand up to the powerful coal lobby. If you are interested please come and join us for a photo shoot.

When: Saturday July 17th
Where: Outside 'Spot 'n Nosh' cafe near IGA -
top of the hill end of Heathmont Shopping Centre, Canterbury Rd Heathmont
Meet us for a cuppa before hand if you wish at 9.45am inside 'Spot 'n Nosh'.
Time: Assemble for photo shoot with Placards at 10.25am and then we will hand out leaflets about Hazelwood.
For more information phone Liz on 9870 0534 in the evenings. Otherwise just turn up!

The campaign to Replace Hazelwood, Australia's dirtiest power station, is going from strength to strength.

But to win this campaign we need a commitment from both the Victorian state government AND the Federal Government.

There have been lots of actions across the state putting pressure on the Victorian Government to act, and we need to keep this going. But now, we need your help to bring this campaign on to the national agenda.

On Saturday, July 17 we’re asking you to join with us in community actions across Australia calling on Kevin Rudd to make a commitment to Replace Hazelwood with clean energy by 2012.

FoE event in South Melbourne
In South Melbourne we will be leafleting and talking with people on saturday morning:
Outside the Commonwealth Bank, 277 Clarendon St (corner of Dorcas street)
From 10 am – midday.

There will be an information stall and leaflets to hand out. Bring placards if you have them.
Please come along, meet others active in climate campaigning, and have a chat with shoppers about how it is possible to close Hazelwood and replace it with a mix of clean energy and energy efficiency.

Organised by Friends of the Earth.

This blog does not take Anonymous comments. Experience shows that comments cluttered with "Anonymous" are boring and people don't know whether "Anonymous" is one person or many. This is not a decision about freedom of speech. It is a decision about boring or unwillingness to be known by even a pseudonym.
