Melbourne Cup 2010 : winner Americain

Miss Eagle is not a gambler and she doesn't follow the racing game - except, like so many Australians, once a year for the Melbourne Cup. See post below.  I can usually pick a placegetter - after watching the horses parade on their way to the barrier and then it is too late to place a bet.

The horseflesh on parade to-day was superb - better than usual, to my untutored eye.  I decided on three placegetters: Americain, So You Think (the phenomenal favourite), and - with a lot of sentimentality - Once Were Wild ridden by Jim Cassidy.

When Americain paraded I was stunned.  This horse was clearly class: French horse, French trainer, French colours, Australian connections.  Not only was the horse clearly something - it was beautifully groomed with a knotted mane.  How typically French - has to show an element of panache lacking elsewhere.  And Americain came home in stunning form. It was amazing. Please check the links below for some flavour of Australia's premier horse race, the Melbourne Cup. The win should do wonders for Australian-French relations!
