Quaker Bonnets and Queensland Bombing - Talisman Saber 2015 at Shoalwater Bay
Not a lot is known, up close and personal, in Australia about the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Australia. The main cause of this is that there aren't many of them/us. About 3000 people identified as Quakers at the last census. This came as a bit of surprise - because the most knowledgable Friends (as Quakers prefer to be called), as well as the records of Friends, could only account for somewhat over 1,000. For those who know about Quakers, there is usually one stand-out factor - they are pacifists and active campaigners for peace. Please go here to learn more of The Quaker Peace Testimony. Quakers also keenly maintain their history with women in many places taking to needle and thread in preservation of the Quaker story. The Editor of The Network can testify personally to the needlework and design skills of Tessa. The event to which Helen refers is the Shoalwater Bay Peace Convergence 2015 which coincides with and is a protest against Exercise Talisman Saber 2015.
~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday I spent a couple of hours with my dear Friend Tessa Spratt mending our Quaker bonnets in preparation for the quakergrannies4peace witness at Shoalwater Bay, next month. Tessa's bonnet has a note inside the brim that it was made in 1860 and it is all hand-stitched. Mine is machine chainstitched and probably dates around 1880s. You can be sure they will be worn with joy at actions in Rockhampton and Shoalwater Bay.
The historic role of Muslims in the development of Australia. Something for those who pursue hate against Islam to think upon.
Cross-posted with Beside The Creek
The ABC program, Compass, last night and to-day, broadcast a wonderful program about the role of Afghan cameleers in opening up The Outback of Australia in the 19th century.
The program, By Compass and Quran, will be available on ABC iview until 7.30pm on 26 April 2015.
It is a wonderful insight into another world. The cameleers married Australian women - white women, Aboriginal women. Their descendants speak strongly and fondly of their Afghan forebears. There is also film of original mosques in which the cameleers prayed. And there is also a comment on why camels are now a plague in outback Australia.
A GLOBAL CALL TO ACTION - STOP THE FORCED CLOSURE OF ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES IN AUSTRALIA
Aboriginal communities in Australia announcea global call to action.
Rally from Aboriginal Tent Embassy to Parliament House,Thursday 19 March.
Assemble at Tent Embassy 11.30am
for a 12.00pm march to Parliament.
12.30 - 2.00pm
speakers.Kimberley Aboriginal communities have declared a GLOBAL CALL TO ACTION to stop the forced closure of Aboriginal communities in Western Australia amidst the growing campaign by State and Federal Governments to withdraw their support and remove Aboriginal people from their traditional homelands.Prime Minister Tony Abbott has whipped up a great amount of fear, anxiety and doubt amongst the already marginalised First Peoples, when he said that:
Editorial Note: Please see this ABC 7.30 Report“What we can’t do, is endlessly subsidise choices, if those lifestyle choices are not conducive to the kind of full participation in Australian society that everyone should have”.
for video, transcript, and discussion.
Abbott’s statement was in support of the declarations made by Premier of Western Australia, Colin Barnett, in a press statement released 12 November 2014, suggesting that the State could no longer support 150 Aboriginal Communities, flagging the prospective removal by the end of 2015.We who live in the remoter areas of Australia do not believe it is a lifestyle choice but an intrinsic fundamental human right to live in our own communities and our own country. We hold significant cultural obligations to our Ancestors to maintain Sovereign ties to our lands. After successive breaches of Human Rights conventions and the forced removal of the Aboriginal Community of Oombulgurri in 2014, we maintain a vote of no confidence in both the incumbent State and Federal Governments in their actions toward Aboriginal people.On Thursday 19 March 2015, Australians across the Nation are being asked by governments to acknowledge ‘Close the Gap’ Day – but for many of our countrymen the ‘gap’ has been significantly widened, placing increasing pressure and trauma on our people. Starting in the Kimberley at 10am, we will march not for this Government agenda, but instead to show our objection to the threatened proposed closures to Aboriginal communities.We stand in solidarity with all other regions in Western Australia and South Australia who have the veil of threatened remote community closures hanging over their lives. We understand that the precedent for a National attack by Government toward Aboriginal people living on their homelands, has already been set in the Oombulgurri closure. We ask the national and international community to stand with us in this action, and the subsequent actions that will ensue as we mobilise effective campaigns to secure our cultural right and entitlement.
Editors' note
- as well as this, take note of conservative State and Federal Governments
attempts at social control of the mainstream population: Medicare co-payments;
dismissal of the NDIS, treatment of people with disabilities -
particularly those young people who end up in nursing home aged care
because there is no place for them anywhere else;
education policies; cuts to social welfare payments to the elderly and the unemployed.
The question to be asked is why is it that Australian governments are still unable
to treat Aboriginal people as citizens with equal rights to the goods and services
which other citizens receive.
This is the 21st Century after all - we put people in space -
we have more money awash in Australia than at any time in our history.
But we still can't meet the needs of our original inhabitants
whose land we stole.
Imagining :: Library refurbishment - cultural precinct - community hub - dead parking area - and will there be money still for tea?
Last night, I attended the above consultation. The consultation was done with Flightpath, an architectural consultancy, with two of their associates. One , the principal, took the notes. The second architect was said to have the knack for asking the good questions so he did most of the talking. The third was a graphic designer who didn't say much at all but took his own notes. Lesley Morgan of the Ballarat Library and the Central Highlands Regional Library Corporation was there. Another person was there from the Council but, in spite of trying, have not yet tracked down who she is. Besides those, there were about eight of us having our two bits worth - oops, giving our input.
Lesley Morgan is the manager of the Ballarat Library and a senior manager at Central Highlands Regional Library Corporation. She has held the role of Ballarat Manager for 4 1/2 years.Lesley has worked in libraries for 30 years in a variety of different roles, including Public, University, School and Tafe libraries. Lesley is a passionate advocate for public libraries, reading and literacy in general. One aim of hers is to assist in breaking down cultural barriers so that social inclusiveness becomes the right of all.
Now I am not sure what this talk of re-making the Ballarat Library, perhaps making it a 'hub' is all about. I have only been in Ballarat about eighteen months. I have, however, come across this article from 2009 - a bare four years ago. Then I came across this - which appears to be from April this year.
Now, we weren't told of this limited amount of money. Perhaps the architects did not wish to cramp our style or limit our imagination. However, for what we eventually got to talking about were were well past this financial limitation. Why? We named the elephants in the room which went beyond the boundaries of the Ballarat Library. We named the parking space between the library and the civic hall - which has been left for a decade to rot in neglect - which, like so many parking facilities, has a period in its daily life cycle which means that is dead, empty, vacant, non-contributing. And there is the on-going saga of the Civic Hall. My contribution on how to revive the Civic Hall and add to the area as a cultural precinct was this marvellous news of the eradication of urban blight in down-at-heel Newcastle:
So the wash up of all this?
We few - we precious six o'clock few - had our wide-ranging say.
We ranged from the library purists who wanted a library to be a library -
to those who were prepared to venture further
into the concepts of hubs and precincts.
One marvellous idea put forward which encouraged me to air the Westbury idea was the idea of flying the Ballarat historical and artistic and literary flag in a manner which is not done by our existing cultural institutions. The proposer began with reminding us of the wonderful Will Dyson and progressed through a litany of distinguished cultural Ballarat-ians, male and female.
So we spilled past the 7pm timeline but in the end had to leave Library + Hub Dreaming. Where will it take us? What happened with the other two consultations? Is anybody listening in a really meaningful way? Will it become just a fleeting moment in time? We wait to see. I don't have a lot of confidence in the Ballarat Council's ability to make the most of opportunities, to respect heritage, to take good care of what it already holds. I have come to this point of view because of the Civic Hall neglect and the Black Hill Look-out neglect.
Cultural Survival - Six years of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
Six Years of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
Today marks six years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted theUN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
In a historic vote on September 13, 2007, 144 countries voted for the Declaration. It is the outcome of 25 years of hard negotiations. The rights spelled out in the document "constitute the minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the Indigenous Peoples of the world." The Declaration protects collective rights and individual rights of Indigenous Peoples in relation to self-government, land, education, employment, health and other areas.
Several countries have made steps towards aligning their policies with the standards enshrined in the Declaration, however, an implementation gap remains. There has been an increased international focus on Indigenous Peoples' right to participate in decision-making processes, especially on the states' duty to consult Indigenous Peoples to seek their Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in regards to issues that will affect their lands, lives, and livelihoods.
As one UN Permanent Forum delegate stated, "The most important element of Indigenous Peoples' ability to claim the right of Free, Prior and Informed Consent is to have informed and organized communities." Access to information about the Declaration and FPIC is crucial.Cultural Survival's FPIC Initiative is strengthening Indigenous Peoples' capacity to implement FPIC by increasing awareness and understanding of this right through community media and community exchanges.
GET INVOLVED!1. Listen to FPIC radio programs here (en espanol aqui). Help translate into Indigenous languages and distribute to Indigenous radio stations, contact us:consent@cs.org.
2. Read Cultural Survival Quarterly featuring articles on FPIC.3. Listen and watch a webinar on FPIC organized with First Peoples Worldwide and International Indian Treaty Council.
5. Invest in Indigenous rights today. Please support our work! Thank you.
As always, we welcome your comments. Please send your feedback and suggestions toagnes@cs.org.
First Origin match to-night: Queensland to win: Jack Gallaway's history: it's a case of "I am woman hear me roar"
State of Origin (SOO) begins to-night. At Origin time, especially, I think of my Uncle Jack who lives in Brisbane. He and his brother, Roly (dcd), were A-Grade footballers long, long ago in Brisbane. Jack is my late mother's younger brother and the only one of his generation still alive. So, Networkers, on my maternal side I have a bit of Rugby League heritage - the love of which was sufficient to fire my uncle into writing not only the history of the Broncos but of Origin as well.
For all of those Mexicans who have moved north of the border into Queensland, Origin is a must read. Only by reading Jack's account will you get to understand the basis for the hatred of NSW Rugby League and the religiosity which undergirds Queensland's attitude to State of Origin. Although he might not tell you - but your Miss Eagle will - that Queensland women are the best and loudest and most ferocious barrackers at Origin time. Go, Queensland women!!! Only when you get to know all this will you come close to understanding Billy Moore's chant of Queenslander! Queenslander!
I now live in Ballarat, Victoria. Victoria has only one NRL Rugby League team, The Storm. And in The Storm there is a substantial amount of Queensland DNA and its playing Origin.
There is a lot of hype and argie-bargie at Origin. From the Queensland side, there is this about Johnathan Thurston (he of the golden boot!) from the Cowboys who is our champeen goal-kicker. The story could be something or nothing. It could be there to instill false hope into the NSW team. It could be there to make Queensland look as if it is overcoming some great odds to win. It could be just to give we, the fans, something to talk about to-day. I don't think we can afford to be without Johnathan Thurston. I know we have The Storm's wonderful Cam Smith (my cap'n, my cap'n) to kick but....
Anyway, Queensland to win to-night and it's "I am woman, hear me roar" as I barrack for them.
Speakers:
* Neville Atkinson, Yorta Yorta Nation
The presentation includes video clips and opportunities for questions
"Find out more about the situation of the Aboriginal people
of the Northern Territory under the continuation of the Intervention,
