The ALP National Conference is in town and there is a lot at stake. We need strong alternatives to the Abbott Government, we need the Australian Labor Party (ALP) to map out how they will stand for environmental and social justice.
That is why FoE will be rallying this Friday and Saturday at the ALP National Conference to say NO to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP)
and YES to safe jobs from renewable energy.

Please keep an eye out at both events and rally with us under the Friends of the Earth banner (and bring your own placards too).

tpp6-trojan-horse_(1).jpgRALLY: Say NO to the TPP!

Organised by the TPP Unions & Community Roundtable Coalition, this is a "welcome" rally outside the conference asking ALP delegates to support the unions' and communities' call to release the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership text and remove Investor State Dispute Settlement from any proposed trade agreements. Unless these very reasonable conditions are met by the government we ask for ALP delegates to call for an immediate withdrawal from negotiations.

Event details:When: 8am - 9am, Friday 24 July.

Where: Outside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (enter off Clarendon Street and head towards South Wharf – near the Polly Woodside).

Speakers:
Dr Pat Ranald (AFTINET)
Ged Kearney (ACTU President)
Dr Deborah Gleeson (Public Health, La Trobe University)
Kelvin Thompson (ALP MP for Wills and deputy chairperson on the Joint Standing Committee On Treaties)
Fran Murrell (MADGE)
Erin McCallum ( GETUP Political Director)

Facilitator: Sam Castro (Friends of the Earth)

Come listen to the speeches and help us hand out badges and fliers to the delegates. They will be holding the formal debate on trade around midday and it is going to be hotly contested. Let's show that we care!

How to get there: enter off Clarendon Street and head towards South Wharf (near the Polly Woodside). We will be starting on time as delegates need to be in the conference by 9am.
Say NO to the TPP and RSVP NOW on Facebook

RALLY: Say YES to Renewable Energy!

The Abbott government is sabotaging Australia’s renewable energy future. Not content with its savage 20% cut to the national Renewable Energy Target, the government has dictated to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation that it can no longer invest in wind farms and rooftop solar power.

The Abbott government’s attack threatens thousands of jobs, sets up barriers for communities who want to go renewables, and makes it more difficult to tackle global warming.

Friends of the Earth will join other organisations and a push by rank-and-file Labor party members calling on the Opposition to commit to a national Renewable Energy Target of at least 50% by 2030.

Will you join FoE, clean energy workers, community leaders, and thousands of voters, to show the ALP Australia is ready for leadership on clean renewable power?

Event Details:

When: 11am - 12pm, Saturday 25 July.
Where: Melbourne Convention Centre, 1 Convention Centre Place South Wharf, Melbourne, Victoria 3006, Australia (Google map and directions).
The ALP must step up to provide the necessary vision and policy settings to put Australia on a path to a cleaner, fairer economy that tackles the challenge of climate change.
RSVP here to join us on Saturday at the rally.

We can't wait to see you there - and don't forget to come find us rallying together under the FoE banner!

Environmental campaigning has provided a divided nation. Renters: The have and the have-nots of renewable energy

A new environment-related organisation has been formed, Solar Citizens, relating to solar energy.  However, Miss Eagle is completely underwhelmed.

Now you might think I would be right behind such an organisation. Ordinarily, I would be - but I believe that all these panels on roof-tops and the way they have got there has built inequity - gross inequity - into the renewable energy game.

Churlish of me, you might think?  I have written to Geoff Evans who leads this campaign this morning in reply to his letter to me.  It is published below.  I would welcome hearing from others who feel that they have been kept on the outer of solar renewables because they rent.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Geoff,
Would love to sign up to your solar citizens campaign - but, boy, have you missed the boat.  I can't get over how much "energy renewables" people have missed the boat. They just don't get it.
You don't seem to understand that, because of your lack of understanding, you have assisted in making this nation one of energy haves and energy have-nots.
We see lots of solar panels on rooves and that is great.  Most of it has been government funded in some way.
My sister, who is in a very senior position at a rather important Australian university, boasts of the profit she makes on her energy bills - in short, getting her energy for free.
I am an aged pensioner who rents. Until ten years ago, I had been a home-owner all my life.  I won't go into the roller-coaster of life which now sees me renting.  I have had solar energy in the past - not cells, but solar hot water.  I would like to go solar.
However, there was nothing in the government program/s which encouraged or co-erced the owners of rental premises to install solar panels.
I would love to have renewable energy instead of the gas and electricity I chew in very cold Ballarat.  But how do I do this?  My story is repeated across the country.  I am sure there are millions who, like me, are dependent solely on social security yet would love not to pay electricity bills like my sister - particularly those who have just had their Newstart or parenting payments lowered or done away with.
But no! We have a middle class - who would never join you, Geoff, in an activist campaign (and I am an environmental activist) - who have become the energy haves of Australia.  At the same time as we have encouraged this, we have left the poor, the low-income people to the seemingly eternal depredations of energy companies - especially the dirty energy companies of Victoria.
Some might use the old adage that "a rising tide lifts all boats".  Current energy campaigns by environmentalists other than me and by the self-congratulating government do not acknowledge the paucity of rental accommodation with solar energy.  The huge number of renters lacking renewable energy - and unable to access renewable energy - prove the lie of this proverb.
So, this morning, I will resort to my blog, Facebook, and Twitter to air this latest inadequate campaign.  You will get some coverage for your campaign - but not, perhaps, the sort you would like to have.
Sincerely
Brigid O'Carroll Walsh
aka
Miss Eagle
AEST was Tuesday May 14 around 10am
Kerry's post came on Facebook came about 10.10am
An excellent idea. Developing systems that are transferrable.
That would certainly be good news for renters.
Sign here please .... for viable baseload solar power stations - URGENTLY
BABY BOOMERS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION
HAVE LAUNCHED A PETITION:
ASKING GOVERNMENT TO KICKSTART SOLAR
BY FUNDING LARGE BASELOAD SOLAR POWER STATIONS.
~~~~

It would mean a lot to us if you took a moment to add your name because:

•           Unless CO2 emissions drop dramatically in the next few years, the planet is likely to heat up by 4°C by the end of the century, making parts of it  uninhabitable for most species, including ourselves.

•           Australia is on track to becoming the world’s fourth largest greenhouse gas emitter, and one of the planet’s biggest contributors to climate change.

•           This is because of the massive amount of coal we export for coal-fired power stations, as well as our own domestic use.  And our coal exports are rising rapidly.

•           Australia therefore needs to take urgent action to switch to renewable energy and break our dependence on fossil fuels.

•           A plan for Australia to make a complete change to renewable energy by 2020 has been designed and costed by Beyond Zero Emissions, using technology which is now available.  This plan includes Baseload Solar Power Stations, which can store energy.  The designers of the BZE plan suggest NSW, SA and Queensland as the most suitable locations for the initial three power stations. All Members of Parliament have been presented with the BZE plan.

•           The switch to renewable energy is possible but needs full government support to get started and encourage investment.  The cost of three Baseload Solar Power Stations is estimated at approx. 1 billion dollars.

•           The Carbon Tax introduced in 2011 was a good start but will not have an effect on investment in renewables for around 15 years, which is too late.

•           We believe the government needs to take the hard decisions to fund large baseload solar power stations and make them viable as a matter of urgency.

http://www.communityrun...org/petitions/fund-construction-and-development-of-of-three-baseload-solar-power-stations

After you've signed the petition please also take a moment to share it with others.  Together we can reach heaps of people and help create change around this important issue.

Thank you!
Naomi and the BBCCA group
